Schulte Pro Bono Team Supports the National Memorial for Peace and Justice

Schulte provided pro bono services to support the formation of the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the accompanying Legacy Museum in Montgomery, Ala., which opened April 26, 2018. The memorial is dedicated to the legacy of enslaved black people, people terrorized by lynching, African Americans humiliated by racial segregation and Jim Crow and people of color burdened with contemporary presumptions of guilt and police violence. The memorial was conceived by Bryan Stevenson, founder of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), with the hope of creating a meaningful site where people can gather and reflect on America’s history of racial inequality. Schulte has provided pro bono services to EJI for many years, contributing research to its historic Supreme Court cases eliminating capital punishment and life without parole for juveniles. Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners In Health, another Schulte pro bono client, spoke at the memorial opening.

Former Schulte pro bono special counsel Danny Greenberg made the connection to EJI, and Scott Kareff and legal assistant Kari Campbell were instrumental in helping the organization trademark the intellectual property surrounding the memorial’s Legacy Museum.
